Wood Firing May 2024
The North Pine Potters had the privilege of learning from Ray Cavill of the Clay School Brisbane, whose extensive knowledge of wood firing enriched their 2024 firing event at the Pottery Barn. Members fully immersed themselves in the process, managing stoking schedules, wrangling wood, and monitoring temperatures throughout an intensive 16-hour firing. Wood firing is not only a fascinating and dynamic process but also a cornerstone of the North Pine Potters, fostering collaboration and a deep connection to the craft.

Petrie Pot Off November 2023

The winners of these categories were presented at the showcase event in Novemeber, with so many beautifully designed pieces the judges were faced with a tough decision!

Salt Firing 2023
An early morning start for the North Pine Country Park Potters to get the kiln heating up for a long and beautiful day of firing. Some stunning results from this salt firing. Salt firing is a vapor-glazing process where salt (sodium chloride) is introduced into kiln firebox at high temperature. The salt vaporizes, and sodium vapor combines with silica in clay surface, forming extremely hard sodium-silicate glaze. This type of firing was first discovered in the early 14th century. In recent decades, salt-firing has been re-discovered by artists and craftspeople as a means of making low-fire pottery, glass and glazes
